The Golden Snitch

A cube'ish ball with a pairs of wings on the sides close to the top. The appearance is like the golden snitch of the Harry Potter universe.

The model itself is old and has traditionally been called several names, including a winged waterbomb, a fly prison, or a teapot. You may also put in a thread and hang it on the Christmas tree.

The top has a small hole through which you may put things:

Base

  1. Start by making the triangle base. Jump to the instructions, and return to here when you made it.
  2. Hold the model with right angle corner at the bottom, the long, open edge upwards, and two acute corners to the left and right. These 2 plus 2 corners become the wings.

Body

  1. Fold the two wing tips of the front layer down and in to the bottom corner.
  2. Turn the model left to right, making the other side face you. The right angle corner is still at the bottom.
  3. Fold the two remaining wing tips to the bottom corner.
  4. It is now a square with the four wings and the center corner at the bottom, to new corners to the left and to the right, and a single, new corner at the top. The new corner locks the original edges together and has a small hole that may be difficult to feel.
  5. We will now fold the side cornres to the centre, two in front and two to the back. You may do it directly or use the measuring procedure below.
  6. Fold the left wingtip from the bottom front to the top corner.
  7. This created a folded corner at the centre.
  8. Fold the front, right corner to the centre.
  9. Flip the left wingtip back down again.
  10. Fold the front left corner to the centre, that is, to the corner just folded in from the right.
  11. The front is hexagonal with a right angle corner at the top and the bottom, and the long edge of the centre-folded corners to the left and right.
  12. Turn over the model left to right, ending with a square side facing you.
  13. Fold the left corner to the centre, measured by aligning the fold line with the fold behind.
  14. Fold the right corner to the centre.
  15. The body is hexagonal. The front and back looks the same. From the left and right small, thick triangles point to the centre. The four wings lie under the thick triangles and point to the bottom.

Left wing

  1. To ease the next steps, make sure the creases at the edges of the model are sharp. Press them hard to the table. Alternatively, hold the edge with two fingers from each hand and massage the edge, all the way round.
  2. Raise the thick, left triangle to point outwards to you.
  3. Pull the left wingtip at the bottom to the right, making the thick triangle open a bit.
  4. Pulling the wing, the small triangle opens into two triangles hinged upwards. The left of those triangles is also hinged in a fold at the edge of the body whereas the right triangle is hinged with the wing.
  5. Open the two small triangles to become one large triangle and lie it flat against the body. No new creases form, only the three hinge folds are used. The left triangle will lie flat to the centre. The right triangle will rotate ending with the wing hinge upwards. The wing follows along by itself and raises its edge towards you.
  6. The double triangle lie flat on the body. The wing edge raises towards you. The wingtip points to the right. At the left the wing edge curves upwards to the top corner.
  7. Push the entire wing downwards, tilting in the triangle hinge. The curve to the left stretches and creates a new crease, forming a small triangle with a point at the top of th model and another point at the lower edge of the wing.
  8. The wing is flat against the body and points to the right. As it is the left wing, it should point to the left.
  9. Fold the wing to the left, in a vertical fold line at the centre line of the body.
  10. The first wing is ready.

Right wing

  1. Raise the thick, right triangle to point outwards to you.
  2. Pull the right wingtip at the bottom to the left, making the thick triangle open a bit.
  3. Pulling the wing, the small triangle opens into two triangles hinged upwards. The right of those triangles is also hinged in a fold at the edge of the body whereas the left triangle is hinged with the wing.
  4. Open the two small triangles to become one large triangle and lie it flat against the body. No new creases form, only the three hinge folds are used. The right triangle will lie flat to the centre. The left triangle will rotate ending with the wing hinge upwards. The wing follows along by itself and raises its edge towards you.
  5. The double triangle lie flat on the body. The wing edge raises towards you. The wingtip points to the left. At the right the wing edge curves upwards to the top corner.

The two wings in the front of the model are ready.

Remaining wings

  1. Turn over the model left to right, and repeat the above steps for the left and right wings.
  2. The folding is finished. The body is hexagonal, with the shape of a square with a right angle triangle at the top and the bottom. From the front, upper half of the square wings point to the left and right. The back side looks the same.

Expansion

  1. Grab the two front wings together with one hand, and grab the two back side wings flat together with the other hand.
  2. Pull the wing pairs until the body pops slightly outwards. Do not pull so hard that the paper tears.
  3. Put your lips to the small hole in the top of the top corner.
  4. Blow firmly into the hole while you keep pulling the wings.
  5. The body becomes filled with air and expands into a cubish shape.
  6. The Golden snitch is ready to fly into the world.
